Against my better judgement, I finally gave in and ran for the board of my club and I have been asked to be fleet captain. I'm a long time sailor, but have only raced distance races where one really can get by w/o knowing the rules very well. I have crewed on course boats so I am not totally foreign to them. I am thinking software with graphics. Any recommendations?

You Tack Pro is the best i have found

The issue is going to be the rules are really complex in that they change several times as to who is right/wrong just during a simple mark rounding

How serious is the racing and how do they handle protests now ?

Higgs, I was racing Committee person at my club for 2 years. We always had enough folks involved that knew the rules better than me. It made it very easy to select a committee any time a protest was filed which was rare. Most times it was worked out on the water.

Although all clubs have one guy who likes to test the rules and push the limits.

I would suggest a current rule book- in Canada it its the Cdn Yachting Assoc. that publishes the rule books. http://www.sailing.ca/. The rules are International so are the same your side of the lake.
Tim is right- there are probably as many "on the water lawyers" over that side as over here. You need a good, respected rules expert- judges are certified at different levels gold, silver etc- to be protest chairman. That way you have an impartial body that can solve the inevitable disputes. We are fortunate in having 2 very senior judges- Olympic qualified- who anchor our protest committee.

You will be fortunate if you have only one guy who likes to push the rules.
Good luck- if you are over on this side this summer I can get you a ride on the committee boat either Tue or Wed. The National is a pretty serious racing club.

We've been the perpetual Committee Boat for the Kentucky Lake Sailing Club. Get the rule book from US Sailing. We use Racestart for starting software and Racesail software for scoring - both free and easy to use. I also purchased a small air pump and two eco horns - saves a lot of money on the off the shelf horns.

US Sailing also has a book with all the PHRF ratings. Get a Protest Committee set up so when protests come up, they can hold a hearing and decide the protest.

Having a well orgainized program and consistently and fairly enforcing the rules and procedures will get you kudo's from all the racers.

We just had a Racing Rules seminar at our club last week. The Protest Committee Chair handed out sheets that described different situations, taken from US Sailing appeals, and divided us up into groups of three (most, somewhat, and least experienced in each group). Each group spent five to ten minutes hashing out the scenario, the applicable rules, and how they would handle it: Toss P out; Disallow protest, etc. We then compared our results to the actual US Sailing appeals results, which outline their reasoning and the rules they applied. Everyone learned some things and had a good time. No software involved, though.
