Catalina 22 Progreso
Hello. I currently sail a 1974 Catalina 22 (not my own boat) as PHRF in Yucatan, Mexico. I've been looking for a sailboat to compete and go out for the day. I'm being offered an Etchells 22 from 1982 that is Mexico (so no import and tax problems), however I dont know anything about those boats, how do they sail, how do they compete in PHRF and against Catalina, J24, Hunter 30 and other boats on our fleet.

I would appreciate any coments or advices. I'm on a very limited budget (the Etchells is $2,800 USD wich I can afford)

Thank you and excuse for the bad english

Dennis Conner, yep that one, still races his Etchells 22 regularly. It is a strict one design class... PHRF will be around 129 for spin class, 141 for non-spin. If you've never heard of this boat, you're probably not up to speed in the yacht racing world. There have been many famous sailors that have competed in this class... Russel Couts, Gary Jobson etc. Do your research first.... a suit of racing sails will cost way more than the boat... so check this boat out thoroughly to make sure it isn't missing anything and that everything works.

Great sailing, high pointing boat. May be tough fora beginner to sail up to it's rating. Buy. It. Sail it.don't worry if you do not win many races the first few years.

That boat reminds me of the Star fleet that we have racing on Lake Hopatcong .... only it is longer. I assume you are not looking for a boat with a cabin.
