I'm organizing a crew of 6 to 8 to race a J-44. Anyone know of a crew duties listing to get the boys started? I need more than just the names of the positions.

crew of eight

For around-the-buoys racing, I would organize a crew of eight this way: foredeck mast headsail trimmer Starboard headsail grinder Port headsail grinder mainsail trimmer tactician/navigator helm The lazy-side grinder handles the release, acts as "spaghetti patrol," and can assist with sewer on douses until the mast can take over. Also handles foreguy and afterguy. The tactician takes care of running backstays, if necessary. I ask the jib trimmer and mainsail trimmer to trade positions back and forth on long spinnaker runs, but they always revert to their original positions for roundings. The mast man is assigned to calling wind shifts whenever he's on the rail.

A good resource....

... is John Heyes' "Winning Races". Chapter 8 has a detailed discussion on crew selection and their organization, positon by position. Numbers of crew positions needed for various boat sizes are suggested. For instance: Boat size 30 ft, Total crew 6 Positions bow, mast/pit, 2 trimmers, mainsheet, helm/tactician. boat size 35 ft total crew 7 Positions bow, mast/pit, 2 trimmers, mainsheet, helm, tactician boat size 40 ft total crew 8 Positions bow, mast, pit, 2 trimmers, mainsheet, helm, tactician. If you have runners, the tactician would cover that duty.

Here is a program for a J30 7man crew.

http://www.anchorbnb.com/bigcrew.htm Spinnaker in wind requires more than 8 on a J44 ...maybe 10? J44 has serious power to tame.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. We do fly the chute with 8, but it is challenging. Your right, this boat flys.
