I'm organizing a crew of 6 to 8 to race a J-44. Anyone know of a crew duties listing to get the boys started? I need more than just the names of the positions.

For around-the-buoys racing, I would organize a crew of eight this way: foredeck mast headsail trimmer Starboard headsail grinder Port headsail grinder mainsail trimmer tactician/navigator helm The lazy-side grinder handles the release, acts as "spaghetti patrol," and can assist with sewer on douses until the mast can take over. Also handles foreguy and afterguy. The tactician takes care of running backstays, if necessary. I ask the jib trimmer and mainsail trimmer to trade positions back and forth on long spinnaker runs, but they always revert to their original positions for roundings. The mast man is assigned to calling wind shifts whenever he's on the rail.

Numbers of crew positions needed for various boat sizes are suggested.
