We just raced our Oday 28 today and got smoked by every boat (Catalina 27s, 28s, 30s ...and old ladies on inner tubes) in the field. None of the boats we competed against seemed to be sailed by rockstars or had tons of money in sails. We just couldn't point as high and were slow on all points of sail.

We've owned the boat for 4 years and it's in good shape. It has new bottom paint and I just got a slightly used Mylar 145% jib that seems to be a good fit.

I'm sure I have much to learn but I feel pretty confident on sail trim basics, etc. as I race on other boats and am fairly well-read.

So here's the question for someone with Oday 28 racing experience: Is the Oday 28 a dog or do I just need to keep working at it? Something special way to configure boat? Any advice?

Apples to Oranges, my Oday 28 smokes Tanzier 22's at pointing but with wind on the stern I get crushed bad. It's one fat beamy hull. Keep trying, the experienced guys that have sailed my boat say it points better than most any.

The 25 has the sleek lines of a pregnant whale. My wife looked at the interior room and said I like this one.... of course. The only racing I would want to do on it is racing to get in a nap. Not sure if the 28 bellies out as much as the 25.

If it's handicap racing all boats should be equal.
Sometimes it takes a while to learn how to sail your boat. I know from experience that crewing and racing your own boat are two different things.
Guys you race against have probably race their boats for years.
Get an experienced racer on your boat to see what can be done.
You say you got new bottom paint, but is it smooth? (You said you were slow on all points)
Attention to detail.

Keep working at it.

Look up your PHRF rating they're slow and can't point esp. if you have a wing keel like my 272 I ran a regatta and had the same problem. Odays weren't built for racing My boats a dog but a really comfortable dog.
