I raced a 79 SJ7.7m. I won several of trophies with it. We would regularly beat the J24 on the first two legs only to get passed on the last leg, if the J boat had good crew. Sometimes the J24 had inexperienced crew and we prevailed the entire race.
The boat has lots of sail area and is easily overpowered. Reef early.
