Well my boats all done and my family is experienced, so we thought we would race a few times this summer. I have a 110, 135, 150 and 170 hank on jibs, but no spinniker. I have two questions: Can the 170 be rigged to act like a spinniker by using a whisker pole and adding gye sheets to the foot of the sail? The sail is a hank on so I was going to attach it to the spinniker halyard, add a sheet to the foot where it normally attaches to the deck and pole it out at that point. Would it work and is it worth it? Next, what kind of grief will I get from the race committee if I try it and register myself as crusing class? Ric

I don't know if you'd get any grief, but you certainly won't be competetive against spinniker rigged boats. Whisker poles have been used for ages. Maybe there is a non spinniker class to race in or there are enough boats to form a non-spinniker class. You could still have fun though. If you are racing phrf at least you may not cross the finish line last even if you are last in your class. Coming in last though all the time gets old.

the 170% genoa is too heavy to act like a spinniker.(.75 or1 oz nylon vs. 5-6 oz. dacron ) Stay with the 150% and on downwind runs, wing and wing it with the whisker pole. Pull the centerboard up as it slows the boat downwind. Or spend the $ and get an asymmetrical spinnaker. easy to handle with even a crew of 2.

There are two classes, crusing and racing. Racing is for those with spinnikers. I just wanted to know if the 170 rigged as a spinniker was: 1. Against the rules as a crusing class boat. 2. More affective than running the 150 wing and wing. 3. More likely to broach.
