I did a scan over the archives and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I'm turning to you. I'd like to get shirts made for my race crew this season. I've done some simply iron on and/or silkscreened t-shirts in the past, but wanted to do something a little nicer. Was wondering, for those that have crewed, what were your favorites? I'm open to suggestions, I've considered t-shirts (long and short sleeved), polo shirts, windshirts, sweatshirts, etc. We'll be doing some longer racing (not bouy racing) on Lake Michigan. So, it can be warm (race start - day time, late afternoon) or it could be cool (overnight watch). Was going to have them embroidered. I've seen boat names, sail #'s, crew positions, etc. placed on the shirt breast, on the sleeve, on the back under the collar. Was not planning on going with artwork, just lettering, but that could change. What looks good/unique/original? Thanks for any feedback that you care to provide.

Our crew has cotton-t's with boat name and sail number on the breast and a big Express logo 'E' on the back. We feel pretty stylin! Flex fit hats too.

Sun UV Protection
Since the crew will probably be out on the water a lot, with regard to shirts, my vote would be for something that does a good job of providing good UV protection. Between the direct rays of the sun there is also water and white gel coat that reflects the rays so sailors get a double-whammy, hence my concern for UV protection when out on the water. Even though the skin is covered with fabric it does not necessarily equate to 100 percent UV protection as some rays can get through some fabrics. However, it is better than nothing. Keeping sun off the back of the neck and sides of the face and ears is another good item to have. Not as "pretty" as those baseball caps one sees worn by Americas Cup crews but healthier. Another useful item that could be provided is sunscreen. It would be good to encourage the crew to wear UV-blocking sunglasses, too. Because this is a personal item that is something they should bring. Having coordinated clothing helps with crew morale. Good luck in your racing season!

Here's my suggestion.....
A long sleeved, knit pullover with the name/logo stiched on the turtle neck and/or down the sleeve. Couple that with a windbreaker with name/logo on back and crew name on front left breast area. That would be a nice combo to work the boat under most conditions. I like John Nantz' suggestion about UV protection, however I think hats are a personal choice. You don't want your crew looking like a boatload of gardeners. Anyway it's easier to identify them by their headgear.

...case of golf shirts for the crew (well really my wife did) with the boat name and sailing numbers on the upper left breast area. It is simple and elegant and can be worn at many occasions or events. Even works well with sport jacket. When we finished the ALIR she presented them to all of us and we were very grateful for them, especially since we had just won our division.

Matching Helmets...
with a face guard... are very chic on the water. Skipper is allowed to wear a helmet like the field goal kicker. Don't forget the stick'em.

Congratulations on your accomplishment in a race where the winner is often the one who anchors first against the opposing tide. Everyone I have ever known has given up on the ALIR because it's a total drifter "race". But, enjoy the shirts that your wife bought. Almost as good as free food.
