Insurance?
They are disgusting beasts. They are extremely athletic, can chew through almost anything, have a very strong homing instinct, are very smart and the females are vicious. They crap and pee all over the place and they don't mind getting their feces all over themselves to make tracts they can follow by scent. My neighbor had them in his unfinished attic (We were attached houses), so they were living one wall away from my living room. What a mess!
BTW if you are going to clean up those turds be careful! Racoon crap can carry some pathogens (Bayliscacaris procyonis). It's not common to get a human infection but it is possible. Use full protection. Heat kills the eggs. Disinfectants don't.

Please try to remove all of the picture duplicates, or ask a moderator if unsure how to do that.

The damage looks awful. Truly Awful... :(

Call your insurer! That's why you have coverage!
And, good luck!!
(sigh)

The second time I have heard of this disaster! They are such thorough destroyers! A real reminder to be sure our boat is buttoned up tight whenever we leave her.

Boy, that's worse than any tantrum my second wife ever threw and that's saying something.
I also would like to know how they got in.

That sucks. Quite the mess! Seems like it should clean up and not be a total loss. The big money is the sails and hopefully they can be patched.

I am not a lawyer, but I think it’s unlikely you’ll get any relief from the yard. The critters got into the boat somehow and did the damage there. I don’t think the yard would be responsible for keeping all wildlife out of their yard. Maybe if you paid the yard to winterize the boat and they left a hatch open you could have an argument. Beyond that, as others have suggested it seems like your insurance would be the place to start.

don't know why the boat is thought to be a total loss? an 83 hunter likely could use new cushions, sails, etc. if you're behind on the marina fees the yard probably has a clause in the contract that they can repo the boat and sell it for past due slip fees. so you need to d eal with that 1st . then buy some rubber gloves and murphy's oil soap and a lot of trash bags..

We have a few smaller older boats in our little YC marina that only carry the required liability insurance (also with the required "wreck removal and pollution abatement" coverage).

It occurs to me, belatedly, that the OP keeps asking about what the yard will do for him because he does not have "agreed value hull coverage" like so many of us carry. In effect, he is self insured.
If so, it is a doubly-tough situation. Major damage to both boat and wallet.
All my sympathies, if this is the situation. :(

You may not be done, disposing of a boat could cost a couple of thousands. Better get your insurance company involved.
If you can put it on a trailer, your local dump will take it for 150 bucks a ton. They will probably also have a large object handling fee, which may add another 100 bucks. See my other thread to find out how I know this.

The only was the yard could be held responsible would be if you have indoor storage. Otherwise, I can't see them being held liable. They would not even be held liable if a human broke into your boat.

I think the most disappointing thing about this is that you don't even get the satisfaction of being able to shoot the racoon.
