Slickcraft 26 Sailfish
Although the race starts in June, I think, the organizers are currently putting out podcasts introducing the entrants. You hear in their own voices each teams reason for entering, their sailing experience, about their boats, logistics and more. The podcasts come out roughly once a week and are about 1 1/2 hours long. They are audio only and you can listen on Tube if you don't podcast.
If you have any interest in the race which starts in Port Townsend and ends in Ketchikan AK. I don't think there is any handicapping, no motors, other means of propulsion are allowed. It attracts a varied cast of adventurous characters and eccentrics. Hearing their stories is fun. Knowing some of the players will enhance following the race which can be done on a race tracker and an almost daily narrative.
Search R2AK or Northwest Marine, who is the sponsor.

Belliure 41 Back in the Chesapeake
A number of years ago I was seriously considering doing the R2AK (Also the Everglades challenge) but I couldn't find a second person to join me that was interested in investing the time and energy to be competitive. Neither race would I like to do solo but there are those...

I recall one year a guy did the Everglades Challenge on a paddle board. I think he was an amputee or had some thing that was physically challenging. He finished - WOW!!!! After the race he said he'd never do it again... I can't even imagine how hard that was!

Both are amazing races!

Belliure 41 Back in the Chesapeake
I think I'd prefer risking the Orca's and bears than the critters in the Everglades. The mosquitoes would carry me off.
Hahaha - well both races certainly have their challenges for sure....

For anyone who doesn't know about this race - even if you generally don't care anything about racing - give this a look. There's also a decent documentary about it, but I don't recall where I saw it.

I am definitely one of those people who doesn't care about racing. But, this event (hard to call it a "race" exactly) is a different sort of thing. Entertaining just for its uniqueness, if nothing else.

We have plans to do the little-sister event: the WA360.
