First, Hello to all from the new guy. I bought an '88 legend 37 ( I'm very happy). Todays project is replacing the depth and speed transducers. I looked in the archives and didn't see the detail that concerns me. After some cutting and banging, both are out but the gap between the hull and inner pan have me nervous about getting a good seal. I am tempted to cut out the liner so that I can glass the whole area and drill new holes. There is lots of (4200?) in the gap and it seems like a future leak. Is this excess? Thanks for all advice!

First off you have exposed the core FG so you are probably wanting to seal that then drill the right size hole.
The best solution is to make a dam out of stiff paper tube of the transducer OD that you tape to the outside of the hull. Then fill the space between the hull and the dam with epoxy filler (epoxy+just about anything powdery). After it cures cut off the dam and install the transducer.
Don't understand what you mean by cutting the liner. the liner is overhead not in the hull bottom. If the second picture has you believing there is a filler material between the hull and the "liner" then you are seeing a lack of spacer (balsa??) material and that HAS to be filled.

Thank you Bill, that makes perfect sense. The appearance of two separate layers ignores the core, not visible in the second picture. The core seems to be held back from the hole. Your tube suggestion is much cleaner than my plan to cut out the whole inner layer.
