"Title search" and Registration in Canada

Ok, so in Canada, how does one go about doing a title search on a
vessel to ensure that there are no liens, etc against the boat? Does
this come about as the result of the 'licensing' process?

And also, to register a vessel in Canada, do you seriously have to
have every bill of sale throughout the history of the vessel (at least
on domestic soil/water), and if so, what happens if one (or all) are
missing? Is it still possible to register?

...Just made an offer on a '74 today; hopefully I'll actually get to
put stuff after my name on these posts. :)

Thanks!

Hi Johnathan,
Congatulations on the new boat. I hope your offer is accepted. Both
boats we have purchased over the last couple of years were done through
a broker and the title search was his responsibility. We registered
Voila! and only needed a current bill of sale to prove that we owned
her. This is also true of the licensing process as we licensed our
dinghy. We are currently registering our new boat and have been asked
for pictures. I do not know if this is new or is based on the fact that
it is a bigger boat.

Happy Sailing

Jonathon,
Good luck with your Vega purchase. There is a website for registering
Canadian pleasurecraft at
that should tell you everything you need to know.

Here in British Columbia it's quite easy to search for a lien against
ones "chattels".

I'm sure there's a similar site for your home province. Try
Googling 'Boat Lien your province'.

Hope this helps, and keep us posted!

Jonathan:
One more note on registering: There's a big difference
between "licensing" a vessel and "registering" a vessel, both in
procedure and expense.
Here's a web site that explains the differences (in Canada).

Hi Peter:

Pedder Bay is a gorgeous marina, 'Sin Tacha' a gorgeous vessel; I
spent a good 15 minutes wandering up and down alongside her last
weekend. I'm in Victoria too. :)

Thank you very much for the info; I knew about the Service Canada
site, but the Queen's Printer regs link will likely be very useful.

...I've just heard back too, by the way, so assuming the sea trial and
surveys are good, I will no longer be a 'cheater' on this list. :D

Cheers!

Oh, this was your message too; I guess I could have replied to both at
the same time. :)

I did find that much out; I know the current vessel is 'licensed' but
not 'registered,' and I understand that it is preferable to 'register'
a boat if you intend to cruise out-of-country with it, so I'm hoping
that all the requisite documentation will come with the vessel, as I
would like to register it eventually...

Cheers.
