"Out of the Blue"

I imagine most of you have read Anne Miller's classic tale of her trans-Atlantic voyage in the Vega "Rupert". I had not so I recently ordered a used hardcover copy from Amazon which I have just finished. A great read, of course.

Interesting thing though. On the flyleaf of this copy is scrawled in blue ball point. "T. Skidmore"

You newer members who do not recognize the name can read Tony Skidmore's account of his circumnavigation of the earth in the Vega "Lorna Doone" on the voyages page of the American Vega Assn. web site.

Peter, window? It did make a me redo my ports. I doubt that the flimsyness of the head door would have survived a second knockdown. Walt, S/V Lyric V120

I have that one ... read it quite a while ago.

Didn't she have a main cabin window blow out and used the head door to cover the opening?

I intend to get that book. I just bought a "used" copy of Log Of The Mahina from one of Amazon's independent sellers. It is a little fragile, but it is signed inside the front cover. That's nice. They usually charge more for a book signed by the author.

Berserk is pretty fun reading if you can stand the part where the long window breaks away at the same time that they lose the drop boards....

I have to add it to my reading list..
re The Berserk... even though their link to the Vega gives them some bonus points, I do have to say that their more recent hijinks are not something I'd advertise much. Very reckless behaviour, playing with other ppls lifes, breaking the law etc.

Mikko,

With such a regulated society everyone breaks at least one
law every day, just yesterday because of peer pressure I was forced not too
separate rubbish into recyclable, compost and land fill and only god knows how
many times I had to leave a vessel sailing alone as I went down below to make
some food or another call of nature.

About risking other peoples lives, thats about the only fair point, however I am sure if asked they would have said no to any attempt to
being rescued if it significantly risked other people.
Anyone who has been sailing in cold weather
knows how tough it is, I have a significant amount of respect for people who do
this and believe they are characters worth emulation, as I have heard somewhere
“The world is going soft and I am not going along with it” long live those
indomitable souls who put themselves in harms way to inspire future generations.
