Ok only one answer per post. What is the biggest design flaw on your boat. Specify which model. My 28.5 has its water tank fill at the bottom of the anchor locker which means the anchor and rode must be removed and the locker cleaned before you fill the tank. My solution is to remove the hose going into the tank from below and fill it there.

Keel

Off hand I would say the keel being bolted on to the hull of my 1981 Hunter 27. I think there are other ways this could have been put on that would have been much stronger.

i get reminded

I get a reminder of our Hunter 1986 31's major, major flaw every time Ilook at the engine. The top tread of companionway ladder is part of countertop. It is not hinged, so it cannot be held up except by dedicated hand. So whatever is done to engine: check fluid level, check for fuel leak, etc, must be done onehanded. What a bother!!!!!!!!! joe

compression posts

By far the biggest goof that Hunter made is using wooden compression posts and steel beams on several different models of Hunters. Eventually they eliminated that system, so they learned the hard way, but not before cursing hundreds of owners with the problem of replacing the posts. As far as the keel bolts go--many boat builders use this system, and how many keels have you heard that have fallen off?

Transducers!

While hunter does a great job, sometimes things pass through quality control. Just like any other company. We're loyal. Our transducer pods don't drain to a bilge. Infact they just don't drain at all. If we ever had a leak in that area, just forward of the keel, the bow would fill with almost a foot to 16 inches of water before it would climb up over a bulk head and then into the bilge. Of course, after we have already called the coast guard, and donned our life jackets. We were told by hunter it was a design flaw, and they suggested we drill a hole to allow water to drain through the bulk head to the bilge, thus only allowing inches rather than feet to accumulate. We're still happy!

Hunter 260

I would have to say the bildge pump that is located under the aft berth, a high point in the system. The rudder kickup function, some times it does when you don't want it to and doesn't when it should. Love my Hunter

Bad Bilge Build

On the popular Hunter 34, the real bilge lies inaccesibly below the interior structural grid. Water gets trapped, cannot be pumped out, stinks, freezes/thaws etc. Only solution was to cut the fake bilge out of the interior structural grid and rebuild the bilge. Talk about lost in the fog!

Water tank winterizing problem

My '85 25.5 has a water system designed with no easy means of draining it for winterization. The faucets in the galley and head are of the hand pump variety. Last winter I had to disconnect the pvc water lines from the bottom of the tank and attach a garden hose to it and then drain the tank into the sink in the head. Of course this required working on my side/back through an existing 6" cutout in the bulkhead, which turned the backs of my hands and wrists into hamburger :) Next year I'll wear gloves. I've been toying with the idea of installing electic sink pumps, maybe that would make it easier. s/v Elan

Hunter Desigh Goofs

Does any boat other than the 28.5 have an anchor well with no cleat for the bitter end and no opening for the rode to pass out of the anchor locker? I suppose the idea was to take the anchor and anchor rode completely out of the anchor locker and cleat it off to a bow cleat, leaving the remaining rode on deck. I've added epoxy coated 1" marine plywood epoxied and thru bolted behind the front face of the anchor locker to an 8" stainless steel cleat in the locker, then cut out a 3/4" notch above it in front edge of the anchor well lid. It's stronger than the deck cleat and cleans up the foredeck, but it was a knuckle buster getting the washers and aircraft nuts onto those bolts from below.

That stupid pedestal-mounted traveler

Some of the mid-1990 (pre-arch) versions of the Hunters have the mainsheet led to a traveler mounted on the steering pedestal. This causes ropes to be flying around in everyone's way who dares to stand up. Luckily, no one has been killed yet by this thing, at least not on our boat. A couple of weeks ago, a screw sheared and the entire traveler car whistled by someone's head at about 100 mph, but no harm this time. Obviously, they were uncomfortable with it at Hunter, too, since the arch became the solution.

Anchor

The anchor on the 33.5 does not lie staight when it is raised....Hunter has it at an angle so it is imposible to install a windlass. As a result, my first mate can't raise the anchor. What were they thinking!?!
