Quieting an outboard motor

Any ideas on how to lower the volume on an outboard? I've got a 9.9 4-stroke Evenrude, which is quieter than my old 2-stroke, but is still LOUD for long motoring. Any ideas on a better after market muffler, housing, or something - other than ear plugs for the whole family :) that will keep the noise down? I know there's a bunch of smart guys/gals out there that must have this figured out already ....

Soundproofing

Defender marine supply carries an outboard soundproofing kit that consists of 1/2" foil-faced foam that you glue to the inside surfaces of your outboard cover. If you have 1/2" clearance between your cover and the moving engine parts it will work, it is about $40 for the kit. I installed a kit on a 1990 Honda 9.9, and my wife thought it made it quieter. It might be worth a try.

Surprised Me

I added Doel Fins to my OB. Not because I thought I was going to plane but to keep the rudder from hitting the prop. At first I just put one on but it loked stupid so I put the other on as well. The prop can no longer touch the rudder and an added benefit as the exaust is through the prop and under the cavitation plate is is quieter. What a deal!

Doel Fins? Like the Power Thruster?

Are Doel Fins something like the Power Thruster? (Metal fins that reduce cavitation?)

Not Exactly

They are plastic fins that go for abou 25$ at Wal-Mart or any place else they bolt to the cavitation plate and stick out about 8" on either side. The power thruster would probably do the same thing but are a little more money.
