Does anybody know exactly what hunter used as hull material on my 1984 h34? Is it cored? How thick at the keel? How thick above the waterline? I called hunter and they don't have the answer.

Construction

I believe the deck is plywood cored - certainly the cockpit seats are (I had to replace the core). I installed my own electronics. When I cut the holes for the sensors in the hull near the keel I was surprised at the thickness - between 0.75 and 1.0 inch - solid fiber glass. From many reports, Hunter is real skimpy on hull thickness above the waterline. My boat is an '83 (Hull #131). About that time Hunter had a "recall" in which they reinforced the hull in the bow area to prevent "oil-canning" in a seaway. Must have been real thin on the earlier boats. Derek

Hull Construction

The H-34 uses a solid glass hull and plywood cored deck. Where hardware fastens through the deck aluminum plates are glassed in instead of the plywood core. The bows of some early production boats oil canned. The factory reinforced the problem areas with additional glass. Mine was done in 1983 though I cannot say I ever noticed a problem. I can't report on hull thickness near the toe rail, but I suspect it is not over built.

Been there

Glass is usually thick near the keel

Many builders overlap the plies from port and starboard along the centerline of the hull. This puts twice as much glass either side of the centerline as on the other areas of the hull. I guess the reasoning is that this area is most likely to be the part that bumps if you ground the boat hard.

Surprised at your comments

Derek: I had never heard this comment about Hunter Construction. I had always heard that they were built well with poor fit and finish. I had thought that the hulls were sound? I guess if we compare this to a Hans Christian or one of the 20-30,000 lbs boats they need cut weight somewhere.
