If feel like an idiot for asking this simple of a questions, but after searching online, I have not been able to find an answer.

I bought my first boat with an enclosed head (manual pump W/C Headmate) and trying to figure out if water left in the bottom of the bowl is normal. In the "flush" setting, I can draw water in to the head and move waste out. When I switch to "dry" solids still move out, but water seems to fill the bottom of the head from the "out" pipe (about an inch left in the bowl). Should the "dry" setting truly remove all traces of liquid? Do I need to rebuild the pump?

Thank you,

Matt

It should pretty much dry the bowl out and leave about 1/2" way down there.. Sounds like your joker valve may be leaking, the piston ring, .. and/or the bottom flapper valve in the pump as well.. Sounds like a fine time to upgrade to the Raritan pump kit !

Up to 1" is about normal

As long as it doesn't rise any higher than the neck of the bowl, nothing to worry about. If it's been more than a year since the joker valve in the toilet discharge was replaced, replace it. However, I would NOT spend the money for a rebuild kit. Thetford-Norcold discontinued the entire W-C line at the end of '08...nothing much still left in the way of any other repair parts, so if anything that isn't in the kit fails after you've spent the money to rebuild, you're out of luck.

Your season is getting so short now that if it's working ok otherwise, I wouldn't even replace the joker valve...I'd just use it for the rest of this year and replace it with a Raritan PHC "conversion" next spring. sbo.com PHII PHC LBA
Meanwhile you might want to spend some time reading some of the discussions in this forum to learn a bit about how to correctly operate and maintain your system...and you might also want to check out the link in my signature here.

No question is too simple to ask, and I'm always glad to help.
