I have a old Catalina 30 and I am going to upgrade her rigging starting with moving the traveler to the cabin top, does anyone have experience doing this, is there a prefered upgrade? Thanx, Pat Gray
There's quite a bit in the archives about this, also re: the Catalina 27. You might want to think twice, particularly if you have a tiller-steered boat. The cabin top comes with some compromises in accessibility, speed and purchase.
I have an '84 CAT30 that had the curved cabin top traveler that was provided by Catalina. I recently converted to a straight traveler from Garhauer. I love it! Garhauer sells kits that include new blocks for the main and genoa as well as the traveler. I recommend the kit. You will have to drill some holes in your cabintop (12 to be precise), but it's worth the effort. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at doug@dweldon.com.
Hi there....As a C-270 owner, a couple of viewson the traveler. The C-22 traveler i had was in the cockpit, much more accessable andmore control when sheeting to windward. The C-270 cabin top traveler isasthetically nice and "out of the way", but a rather sloppy set up, and much traveller use is in order as far as sheeting to the weather.Good luckDoug
I own 81 C-30, I sailed her for a couple of years with the traveler assembly in the cockpit. It was in the way and I didn't like running out half a mile of main sheet when I would run down wind. I didn't like the arched rails that other c-30s had over the cabin. I spent the money and purchased a flat rail made by Harkin. The base mounts I used gave me pleanty of clearence and it looks good and works great. Spent about 1200.00 to get the job done.
