Questions on buying a new used boat

We've been looking to move up to a bigger boat and had some questions. Yachtworld has some interesting boats for sale that look like potentials the problem is they are quite a distance form me. How accurate is their shipping calculator :

This would be for a boat that is inland on a lake so sailing her home would not work.
Also, moving a boat from fresh water to salt besides changing out the zincs is there any other issues? Can you paint over their bottom paint or does it have to be removed? I know fresh water bottom paint is different. I'm not sure there would be an adhesion problem.

Some paints that are often used in fresh water are incompatible with salt water paints and would need to be removed. VC-17 is a good example. It's also possible that a more general purpose paint could have been used, which you could paint over. The good news is that a boat that's spent its life in fresh water will likely have less corrosion problems than one from salt water.

I put no faith in estimates like these, nor in uship. When we bought our Hunter and looked to get it shipped, judging from the questions asked the uship bidders didn't even have boat moving experience. You are just paying for a truck with a hitch.
On the details in your uship bid, it's hard to figure our why the comparable moves cost spread is so wide for reasonably similar distances. Obviously there are other factors, so I don't see how the estimate could be very accurate. Are you prepping the boat or thinking the movers will? That would factor in as well. Just my $.02

The boat prep and relaunch each add to the total cost as Justin_NSA has mentioned. Some of that you can do, but other parts need to be professionally handled. Check with a boat mover near your boat's final destination or at its present location for a more accurate number. Perhaps the hauler will have an open date during which they have no load for one way of the trip. Any help from other people who have used a particular mover would be useful. We moved boats 4 times. Each time we negotiated with the actual hauler we came to an agreement that was written, signed by each party, and honored by both parties. No complaints.
AHHHHH! Mattapoisett, MA. I remember it well. Several years ago we bought a damaged small boat there, hauled it home, repaired it, and enjoyed it. Fond memories.

IMHO, the best thing to do if you wish to nail it down is to get your own shipping quote directly from the shipper. Also, contact a boatyard near where the boat is kept to get a quote for the decomissioning cost. You then, of course, must figure in the recommissioning cost at your (destination) end. The basic shipping cost formula is [(distance x weight) + road fees].

That's what we did. We used Spurgeon Yachts out of Stockton Lake, MO. They unstepped the mast for us. We had to pay a 'dead-head' charge, so arrange a time when they are hauling a boat out of your destination location if you can.
