questions from an old newbie

Good Mornin' all and sundry,
Help me out folks, I'm driving six hours to look at an '84 27PS, How important is a single hull blister you can cover with your palm? Where can I find a trailer? What's a ballpark figure for having the boat transported from So Cal to San Francisco?

Transport: Blisters

About $800 should do it if you can find an Independent transport co. Less if you can find someone delivering one way and going back empty. Oh! make sure they carry liability insurance. About blisters: Blisters are like mice where there is one there are more. Just
because you cant see em dosent mean they are not there painted over. Get a surveyor
One blister is not a big deal to repair Many blisters are a different story.

My boat was on a trailer so it might not be applicable to your case. I posted a request for bid on USHIP for towing services to move a boat from CO to AZ. I received 3 bids in less than 2 hours and ended up paying $400. The company was great, insured and went way beyond the call of duty. When they went ot pick up the trailer the lights were not working, repaired the lights, greased the bearing, and only charged for the cost of the new trailer lights.

May be worth a shot to see what is available as it cost nothing to post a bid request.

Well Here we go, I posted on USHIP and got a decent bid from Jags Marine Transport. I'd had my Broadwater 30 (sedan cruiser) transported before and assumed they'd load from a ramp (wet load). Au contraire! I have to have the boat lifted at both ports ($400) that I hadn't planned on. Another false assumption is that the transport company would unstep and prep the mast as part of the service, wrong again! PB& J, I'm going to be eating PB&J before I get Longbow snuggled in to her new berth in Suisun City

Haulout charge seems quite high to me, but maybe for your area, that is what you will pay. Call around to different yards.

I think I wore my dialing finger out looking for different yards but SF Bay area is an expensive place to live. Thanks for the advice though

A transport company is a transport company not a mast stepping or unstepping company that's something the yard is suppose to do. If you want your boat wet launched, you have to ask if they will do it. Never assume anything and ask every question that you can.
I used U-ship. The company that I booked my transport with (EMI Transport out of Indiana) was great. Nick and Mike were great to work with, and kept in touch on everything. I gave them a big window (3 Months) so they could get a return trip. It made my haul a bit cheaper. I'd use them again in a heartbeat. My haul was $2900 for 1600 miles.

Thanks for the advice, I'm a little wiser and a lot poorer after failing to ask the right questions of the hauling company, the marina, and the yard that loaded the boat. The boat will be delivered Monday at Vallejo Boat yard. The Dana Point shipyard, who loaded it were not very user friendly, they charged shop rate for every inhale and exhale. They bumped us back in the schedule for a big new motor yacht to have something done on the lift, which put the driver over his time and cost a day. The yard manager just smirked. They charged $187 to lift the mast off, that's with me disconnecting stays, shrouds and connections and a 15 minute time limit. And then, The goon wouldn't take my visa card for any of it. A very frustrating situation made worse by a tight budget and high anxiety. I got the impression that the yard had no use for small time customers or small old sailboats.
