My "new" 1981 O'Day 23 has been in the driveway for three days and the questions are falling like flies!. First, I also own a Catalina 22 and have some experience with that but this boat is a little different. The serial # on the bill of sale (I haven't looked for it myself yet) is as follows: XDYT0778M81H. How does that translate? Also, the mast is laying on the rails with no shroud lines attached so I am wondering about the correct procedure for raising it in the spring. On the C-22 I only disconnected the two forward shroud lines and the forestay and the mast came down easily. This one is bigger and heavier and pins differently at the step. Will the pins support it without shroud lines connected at first? Also, does anyone have an owners manual or any other rigging or sailing instructions for this boat? or any other pertinent info? Thanks in advance, Tim

Stepping/Unstepping the mast

I have the same boat, a 1981 ODay 23. Stepping/unstepping the mast is easy. It takes 2-3 people for best/easiest handling. The pins at the base of the mast (there are 2) act as a hinge for raising/lowering the mast. My first task is put the base of the mast into the tabernacle (the step plate on the deck of the boat) with the mast laying on the deck. I then put in one of the pins, either the forward or back one. With one guy on the back stay, one on the forestay, and myself holding the mast at the center of the boat, we all push or pull and up it goes. As soon as it is in place, I put in the other pin. I hold the mast in place while the fore and aftstays are secured, somewhat loosely. The shrouds (I call them side stays) are secured. The last step is to put the correct tension on all the stays. The whole thing is easy as pie. I also believe it is possible to raise and lower the mast without taking out the side stays. Paul

Some Answers

I'm including an email from Rod Johnson, a veritable resource for all O'Day models. This formulae will explain your serial #. As far as manuals, I would love to see them archived on this site, available for a small fee to download. I have discussed this with the website owner Phil, and its something that may be possible in the future. They may be available from Rudy at D&R marine. 508-644-3001, fax 508-644-3002 As a supplament to Pauls' mast raising method, on my OD25 I have now done it 3 ways. One using brute strength and the others using a lifting aid, such as a gin pole (boom), and the latest using the A-frame method, described under the Daysailor forum, by Ben Allen. The boom-as-the-gin-pole method is described at the Yahoo, O'Day site in their photo forum. I agree with Paul to attach your shrouds, but leave them a little loose.Take care. Don The Hull I.D. # should indicate what your boat's serial # is (or hull#) the serial# indicates the number of your boat in the entire production run of the 28. So if the # is say 356, yours would be the 356th 28 built since production began. format is: XDYxxxxxMYYY where XDY= O'Day, xxxxxx= Hull#, M=month of certification, Y=last digit of year of certification, YY=last 2 digits of year of Manufacture. the 5 digit # (xxxxx) may indicate model code + hull#, I don't know, my Day Sailer is hull # 10201, and so the "D" for Day Sailer was moved to the end of the HIN and set apart by a "-". "MY" might also be month and year of production, YY might be model year (different sources list different meanings for code. I suspect yours may be something like: XDYxxxxxMY86 the first production year for the O'Day 28 was 1979. Check out the "SHIP SHAPE TV" web site for a better description of HIN formats. www.shipshapetv.com Rod Johnson,"SUNBIRD"

you can raise the mast by yourself . i bought my boat from a handy guy who thoughtfully had rollers welded on the bow and stern pulpit. to step i simply rolled the mast FORWARD and slipped in the forward pin. went to the bow and lifted the mast to my shoulder and walked it up. i used the mainsheet attached to the main halyard to cleat off so i could place the aft pin and go aft to connect the backstay . lower in reverse. as with the cat 22 tape the tunbuckles up or use bungee to keep them from binding.
