Hunter 25.5 hernando beach
Hello i recently purchased a 1984 hunter 25.5 now my question is this, they make them with two different keels one only draws 3.3 the other draws i think 4.7 the owner wasnt sure what one i have is there a way to tell what draft i have? Other then me jumping in the water to see the keel?? Can you tell just from looking at the keel bolts or something? Thanks!!! Its a great looking boat its a big upgrade from my columbia 22!

A simple solution. Tape a piece of electric tape around a length of line (20' or so) about 4' from one end. While holding both ends of the line drop the rest overboard at the bow. Tie the end closest to the tape to the lifeline at midships so the tape is just touching the water. Take the other end down the other side of the boat and when it is even with the other end pull the line tight making sure the line runs all the way under the keel. While holding the point where the line meets the lifeline release the first side and pull the line through. By estimating the distance from the lifeline to the water level, subtract that amount from the total length from the tape point to the point you are holding. The remainder will twice the keel depth.

I had a 1984 Hunter 25.5. Hunter. Here is a simple test. The shoal keel with 3' 3" draft is very tender. If - when you step on it, if it quickly heels then it is a shoal keel. A 4.7 Draft would be much more stiff. Shoal keel has a very long keel along the bottom while a deep keel would be not as long along the bottom. The overall weight of the shoal keel is heavier.
If it has a trailer - you can estimate the draft.
