I have never owned a sailboat, infact my sailing experience is limited to a sailing class in college many years ago. My family and I feel that this would be a great sport and form of recreation and have been considering a Catalina 22. Besides sailing in the Great Salt Lake here in Utah, once we have acquired necessary skills and experience we would like to trailer it to Southern California three or four times a year and sail to Catalina, and explore the Channel Islands, etc. Would the Catalina 22 be a suitable craft for such a mission for a crew of four? I would be very interested in any of your comments and impressions regarding the Catalina 22. Thank you in advance. R. Parr

Go for it!

From this website, it seems the Cat 22 will do the Catalina Island cruise comfortably! (weather permitting) I've been out of the sailing scene for over 20 years and recently purchased a Catalina 22. The Cat 22 is a very easy to handle sailboat. My son loves it and it is a great family endeavor. Check out some local sailing clubs when you purchase your sailboat. I know the ones here in Phx have some great family raft ups. We're having one next week for Cinco de Mayo were we'll do a "sunflower" raftup - tie some halyards across the middle "circle" and have a pinata for the kids to hit while on our dinghys! (And for us adults, we're having a sangria contest) We also need "ammunition" that weekend for the water fights for both kids & adults! The only complaint I've had about my 22' (take into consideration mine is an older model and the newer models may have "corrected" this) - is that someone over 6' has a hard time standing up after using the porta pottie and putting their pants back on! :) It's a great "starter" family/overnight boat and lots of fun. Also, the folks on this website are AWESOME and much more KNOWLEDGABLE than me and can provide you with all the advice you may need along the way. I'm sure that when you and your family feel ready to do Catlina or anywhere along the CA coast, just post the date and you may have someone to sail alongside you! GO FOR IT! Lisa "Cozin"

Yes!

In my opinion it would be a great choice. Some people would consider it small, but it depends on your tolerance for that. We are a family of three (+ a medium sized dog) and love our c22. Pete

Think about a 25

A growing family of four will very quickly outgrow a 22. I would suggest you also check out 25s, which would probably serve your purpose better. It's still easily trailerable, small enough to be inexpensive, but will be able to accomodate 4 people better and will most likely be a little more kindly if you decide to do the California thing. Another suggestion would be to look at as many as possible before buying one. This way you can know what you want & don't want before you shell out the cash. Have fun with the search! LaDonna

Thanks!

Thanks again for the time you each gave to reply. I do have a question regarding the Catalina 25. How hard is it to rig compared to the C 22, and how many people does the rigging require?

25vs 22

Hi There, As far as rigging there isn't a whole lot of difference to rig a 25 as opposed to a 22, you are simply dealing with a bit taller mast, a bit beamer boat with a lot more kindness on the open sea. Not that a 22 wouldn't get you to Catalina and back, but for 4 adults it would be more comfortable, and a bit more stable. Happy Hunting, Dave LaPere
