Had the chance to fly my first aysmetrical spinnaker this weekend and have a few first timer questions. When trying to raise the sock (ATN) the sail kept bunching up and stopped the sock from continuing up. Had to lower and raise and shake to get the sock all the way up. Any suggestions how to keep this from happening? Once out sailing, reaching we put up the sail. Winds were 120 degs at 6kts true over the port, once the sail was up it went to apparent 90 deg at 11kts. What does this mean? Yo, Don are you listening? What else can I do to improve this setup. Dumb me I wasn't watching the speed before and after setting the spinnaker to see what the difference was. Next time.... Bringing down the sail was very easy though different, Wife turned more down wind and I released the tack. Joan came up front with me to see how the sail is brought down. Wow was that exciting, then pulled the sock down and stored it. Jim S/V Java

first aysmetrical

Try to keep your tack line/ luff tight when you deploy or undeploy. Your increase in apparent wind speed and change in wind angle is do to your increased boat speed. Bear away and keep your wind angle in the 120-140 range. FYI~If the wind speed was 6 kts apparent before and 11 apparent after your boat speed increase would be about 5 kts... nice pic

Did the sock lines get tangled?

I was talking to a friend about socks and he mentioned that the sock control lines can get wrapped around the spinnaker. He said it could be avoided by having better control of the control lines (don't let them flop around.) He couldn't describe how that is done such that I could understand it. (OK I forgot). Markdb

If the Spinnaker was twisted inside the sock....

It will deploy in the manner in which you descirbed. Deploy and douse it several times and it will begin to work easier for you. Also, it is best to douse the sail while it is still a bit full. It will form itself nicer inside the sock for next time. Best of luck Jack Beneteau 411 w/ Spinnaker

Apparent wind

When your boatspeed increases, your apparent wind moves forward. You'll learn to anticipate this whenever you put up the chute. Because of this phenomenon, it's a good idea to start out with a slightly tighter tack than you think you'll need. Easier to slacken the tack than tighten it while underway .........When you pack a spinnaker with a sock, do it with the sock's seam facing you, so that it goes into the turtle without a twist. My sailmaker added a red stripe to the seam to make it easier to do this, but ATN does not. Anyway, that makes it easier to avoid twists and bunching.
