i just bought a hunter 30, 1980. My question is: How do I know what type of engine is in the boat? I know it is the original engine. Also, the plate on the transmission has "nz584", that is it. any help would be appreciated. thanks

On engine

On the engine there is a serial # plate. The first digit of the model # is the number of cylinders and the last two on shaft Hp. Example, a 2 cylinder 20 hp is 2QM20. A 3 cylinder 30 hp is 3QM30. The Q is the series. I know there a GM and QM, maybe a YM or two. I happen to have an old parts book for model 2QM20/3QM30 but it doesn't say where the plate is. Email me if you want me to fax a page on something in particular

On my Yanmar

the nameplate is on the front of the engine, just above the manual crank shaft (I think). Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty 1981 H33

Take a picture and post it...

I'd know if it was a Yanmar immediately. It may, in fact be a Renault though. I'm thinking back then. Hunter used Renault for a limited time. Good Luck.

Torrensen Marine runs a site called marine diesels direct, below. Lots of good info on Yanmar diesels.

ID your engine

Prior to 1980, the standard installation was the Yanmar YSM-12, a single, horizontal-cylindered 9hp diesel. In 1980, Hunter began installing Yanmar 2GM20's in the boats. If the engine appears to be rather small and kinda stands up in the engine space, chances are good its a 2GM20. Squat, black and pretty much fills up the space, I'd bet on the YSM-12. If you can, take a photo and email it to me at bhowie@txucom.net and I'll tell you what you have.
