Question re: zinc anode for h29.5

I have a '94 Hunter 29.5. Always wondered how to get a zinc on the shaft. Unfortunately, the strut covers the whole of the shaft on the outside (I might have .5 inch clearance...too little to fit a zinc). Question is this...what about installing the zinc from the INSIDE. I have plenty of room underneath the aft berth to fit a zinc on the shaft. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The anode must be in the water. Sounds like the only alternative you have is on the end of the shaft/prop.Don

29.5 zincs

I had a 1995 29.5 and did not have that setup. Interesting thought on zinc on the inside. I would question the safety aspect of that if it were to come apart at high rpm. Could it possibly put a hole in your hull? Will be interesting to hear any further comments from the folks out there. ken

electrically bond the shaft to a zinc elsewhere

When at the dock, or at anchor use one of the "fish" zincs - these have a large alligator clip, a long lead and a large zinc. Connect the clip to the transmission/engine and drop over the side --- tie it off of course!You can get these large zincs at any marine supply house.The Zinc needs to be in the water or it won't work.

I put a zinc

on the end of the prop shaft when I had a 29.5. It's a two-part deal you can purchase at West Marine. You replace one of the prop nuts with a special nut that holds the zinc. Then the zinc attaches to the special nut with a small allen head machine screw. Looks like a torpedo tip pointing backwards.Before discovering this bit of hardware, I was able to slice a doughnut zinc down so that it would fit between the cutlass bearing and the prop. I was concerned that there wasn't enough space between the cutlass bearing and the zinc to allow water to flow over the bearing for cooling purposes.The zinc needs to be in contact with the water to have any effect, so unless you have a LOT of water in your bilge putting the zinc inside accomplishes nothing.
