Hello All

I am a recent owner of a Scanmar 35 with a Volvo model 2003 Diesel engine. I love the boat - just not sure she loves me. First day out fresh water pump went - a week to have the pump rebuilt and Bring On Another Thousand. A week later I now notice a steady drip from the raw water pump. Looks like it is coming from the panel that covers the front which I assume is access to impeller. Guessing maybe a seal?? but not finding much info online. Anybody have some sage words of wisdom born of experience?

Thanks much.

Mike

It sounds like the cover gasket. Pull those small screws off and look at it, it is incredibly simple. And maybe fifty cents to repair yourself.

What went wrong with the pump? What did they rebuilt? $1K
Did the bearing quit or the seal leaking?

May be just the impeller broke a vane. $20 at most.

Thank you for your suggestions. I bought a roll of gasket paper and some sealer today. I will start at the simplest solution first and see if that fixes it.

Yeah. You're on the right track; just one thing though. Generally it is not recommended to use a gasket sealer on those things for a couple of reasons. Try and just see if you can gently remove that outer cover and see if the gasket is indeed broken. You kind of need to do the "forensics" on the thing to try and make sure it was indeed the gasket. If it is for sure leaking right behind the outer cover, the gasket SHOULD be it, but don't glue another one on just yet. The pump housing may be so corrupted as to require a drop of sealer, but if that is the case the pump is about gone anyway. Try first a dry gasket.

I gotta know; did you for sure pay a mechanic a grand to fix your pump? Did he rebuild it? Replace it? To be honest, I work on boats and it would have to be hard in my heart to charge a man a cool grand for a water pump. Including paying for the pump..
