Epoxy, question? Oday 27. Submitted by Clay of Cape Vincent on 03/29 at 04:47AM regarding Hello everyone, I ground and filled for blister repair on my 1975 Oday 27' last fall I'm going to be coating the bottom with epoxy (approx 10 mils) Bottom poxy, epoxy barrier coat, from West Marine. Over this I'll be applying VC17m extra, antifouling paint. My main Question is, what do I use to establish my waterline "line"? I know painters use a form of masking tape for paint, what works best for "epoxy"? Is there a special material/tape that I should be using and where do I find it? I want to protect my hull, AND keep the ascetics. Please help. I'm also using "vertglass" on the topside to restore the "luster" any comments on this product? Thank you

3M blue masking tape

I did the same thing last year (including the VC17) and 3M tape worked fine. If you move fast you can leave the tape in place for two coats of epoxy, but it's best to strip the tape if it's going to sit more than 24 hours. When I applied the VC17 (red) I set the tape two inches above the static water line. I now have a red "boot top" above the waterline and it hardly wears. I can refresh the paint from the static waterline down without having to retape the hull. Wiping with a rag dampened with methanol restores the color above the waterline. One more thing...as you probably know, VC17 dries VERY quickly. I mix it in the can then pour into a large plastic ketchup squeeze bottle with a funnel. Then I squeeze what I need onto a roller or brush. Shaking the bottle every so often agitates the paint and keep the metallic copper partiles in suspension. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Fine Line PlasticTape

The 3M Blueline Paper tape has a long removal time (up to 7 days); but it's quite thick, and leaves a distinct ridge. For waterlines & bootstripes, I prefer 3M Scotch High Temperature Fine Line Tape 218 - a 3.8 mil (0.095 mm) copolymer plastic film backing with acrylic adhesive. A very conformable Fine Line paint masking tape that can provide a very sharp break line with a minimal paint ridge. Remove within 24 Hours. Regards, Gord

Masking water line, vertglass

I have used vinyl plastic electrical tape to mask water line using Micron CSC bottom paint and works OK. Not sure about vc17 but suspect would work. You could test it on another surface. I have several friends who have used vertglass to refurbish old fiberglass finish and results have been very good. I plan to try it this year.

Careful!

Be careful of electrical tape. Though I tried it in another application, I found that it doesn't remove cleanly. Little bits get caught underneath the epoxy which are impossible to get out and maintain a smooth edge. In the worst scenario, you might tear the edge. Granted, the epoxy I was using was somewhat softer than what your using, but I wouldn't take the risk.

Agree with Gord

the light green stuff called Fine Line works great for waterlines because its a little stretchy and helps you go around curves, plus the blue stuff left gum after awhile. If worried, you could carefully add some mold release to surfaces.

Thanks

Thank you all, for your help, fine line plastic tape sounds like the way to go. I appreciate the help, again, thanks!
