I just hooked up a Simrad WP30 auto pilot. It says its compatible with all Garmin GPS’s. I have a 182c GPS. I have both working independently. I notice that they have several wires of the same color on each unit. I would "assume" that these wires should be joined. But before I do this I thought I’d ask someone that has already done it. Thanks for the help.

I've tried it without success so far....

tried to interace my 182 (not color) and WP30. The instructions for both are very specific although it's not exactly intuitive, so read both carefully. I think it's a matter of connecting one wire from each unit to the other. But, I'm not doing something correctly because I get nada. Then again, I'm not exactly sure how it should work when it does work. I've talked with both Garmin and Simrad and am assured that it should work. It's still on my list of things to do, or rather finish. Please let me know how things go for you here for via email dcdon@hotmail.com

Garmin updates

Fellas, Once you figure the wiring out, make sure you have downloaded the latest Garmin software updates. Until you do, your NEMAs won't talk to each other. I don't have a Garmin, nor am I ever intended to tie any of that stuff together, but I do remember reading about it, here and elsewhere. Go to Garmin's website and look around. Also do a Forum Archives search here, and find out what you need to know before you gt the things wired up and end up being potentially frustrated. Stu

Don't assume that wires of the same color

automatically go together. Check the wiring diagrams in the manuals for the A/P and GPS. Look for wires labeled NMEA IN and NMEA OUT. You want NMEA OUT from the GPS to go to NMEA IN on the A/P. Also, check the 182C's setup menu - you want it to output NMEA data, not Garmin data, which is the factory default. Good luck....

Know your talkers and listeners

The colors do not match each other at all. I have a SimRad W30. I beleive the white wire is the "listener" that connects to the talker. From what I remember, the Simrad has only R+ and R- wires plus the common ground. I beleive those are blue and white. Simrad can help you with this. I have found them very helpful in trying to figure it all out. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
