We have come across what looks like a really good deal on a 1989 O'day 272 with a wing keel. It has had many upgrades and looks to be in very good condition. I don't know that much about the O'Day make and was wondering if there was anything to look for. How do they sail? Are they well built? What do they compare to? I know some of these questions are subjective but I would appreciate any comments. Thanks in advance, Rob

Same as Pete

Get the survey on any type of boat. I owned a 272 for 10 years. Easy to singlehand, fold up table makes the cabin huge for 27ft. Sailed great with the wing keel. Good Luck Jeff sv Wild Goose

Pete and Jeff how about wave comfort

when under way and at anchor/mooring. I know my 222 is a "cork on the water" compared to a 272 but a believe a fin keel would help a lot to alleviate the side to side motion.

272

Compared to the Venture 23 I had before the 272 it felt like a ship at anchor. I rode out two storms at anchor with 40 mph winds. Very stable. The boat slides into a heel, while sailing, very comfortable. Hope that helps. Jeff

Ours is a fin keel 27 -it sails so well I couldn't be happier in a very used boat. When we were in your position everyone we asked said Oday is a really good bet if in decent shape. A few soft deck spots were noted by the surveyor, we'll get around to repairing them. Chainplates are in great shape, glad we checked plus got new open turnbuckles. I don't mind the minor quirks as we refit it chunk by chunk, the hull and the ride are great. Comfy sleeping a couple people or sailing with 5. Points up really well. We've found the 1974 idea of a thickness of fiberglass was quite substantial, can't say if it gets thinner by '89.
