I'm looking at my first Oday. Have a chance at a nice III but am told by some people that it is not recognized by the daysailer association so can't be raced. Not a big issue for me now. Does it affect resale? how does a III compare to a I or a II?

DSIII

David - It is true that the DS III is not class legal because the hull was changed to increase freeboard aft. For most this is not an issue - do you plan to race one design? If you want to get in the fleets you will need a DS I or II. Resale is a toss up - the boat will be worth more to a non racer who knows daysailers because of the revised hull but less to anyone with an interest in racing. Justin - O'day OWners' Web

Sailing fun outweighs resale

Unless you expect to race, forget about resale on a Daysailor. I have had an O'Day Rhodes 19 for 20 years and wouldn't consider replacing it. The entertainment it has provided has been the most important value. As I became confortable sailing it, I replaced things such as sails, kicker and trailer and even had it repainted. The money you will spend both enjoying it and maintaining it over time will far surpass any difference in resale value. To have total strangers walk up to me at the launching ramp and say, Wow! I used to have one like that. Wish I still did. Well, every time I head out into Galveston Bay, I smile.
