hangers and bin

I installed a hanger for the pulpit last year, but just forward of the forward hatch I have two ss hange hooks suspeneded from under the deck, these hold the 'ears' of my danforty, and the stock sticks forward into the tiny locker that I also stuff the chain and rode into up in the peak. I also have a tupperware container, but it is always in the way, so hence my experiments with the two other systems. So far the under deck hanger works best, and if I know I will be anchoring frequently during the day, I hang it on the pulpit. One of the few features my 'dream boat' did not have when I was comparing it to my prepurchase criteria was a bow pulpit. It did have a forward hatch, and I initially thought that I would convert that to a locker by putting a bin under it, but found it more useful for ventilation.

Anchor storage continued

Ive got a 12 lb bruce anchor. I had a welder make me up a 1/4 stainless channel I bolted it on deck just starboard of the head stay the anchor stock fits in it and I secure it to the channel and pulpit with bungee cord. There is no roller I just filed a smooth bevil on the forward edge of the channel. When I anchor I just nudge the anchor stock off the channel and It lowers and raises about the same as a lowering through a bow chalk. Its cheap and simple with no moving parts works for me.

I lost 2 anchors in one snotty week on the Chesapeake Bay last spring that were hung from the bow rail. The first was grabbed by a wave. I hung it in the brackets then put some light line as backup around the stock and pulpit in the event it slipped loose from the brackets. Heading upwind in 27 knots apparent a wave came and ripped it right off. The brackets were twisted up and the light line had no chance. Now, I had also slipped the rode down the deck pipe to keep the chain from marring the deck. The length of 3/8" line I had secured to the eye parted (an old, worn section I admit). In retrospect, it was probably worth losing the anchor as opposed to dragging it along and doing a number on the hull fiberglass. As rough as it was, I had earlier tried to remove it from the brackets, but the foredeck wasn't very welcoming. Later that week and with a new danforth, I went about my business. I 'learned' my lesson and placed the anchor in the bracket but made a proper lashing as backup and another short strap to secure the eye. Another windy day, maybe low 20s with the wind and seas on the beam--uncomfortable but it didn't concern me. Out of nowhere a large comes over the bow. Long story short, I had another new anchor and new bow pulpit. I only hang an anchor from the pulpit now on short transits between anchorages in protected water. P.S. Boat was a Catalina 27, not the little boat you see in the picture at left.

Question for you canvas bag users

Doesn't the canvas bag get wet from the rode? Thanks.

I'm a 'canvas bag' user....

Used a canvas bag for my primary anchor on my previous Cat 27, and use a canvas bag for my current lunch hook/back-up anchor on my H28.5. Yes, the canvas bag will get wet with use, and it will get dirty too (particularly if you anchor in the Chesapeake Bay mud). On my previous boat, I used to haul up the anchor and rode and put them in a large black plastic trash bag as soon as I got it on deck. Then into the canvas bag. Once or twice a season I took the canvas bag home and washed it. Most of the time, it just dried out by itself in the lazarette.

Lazarette storage

I store mine in the starboard lazarette beside the cockpit. Any water/debris ends up there rather than the cabin. As with others I also deploy from the stern and walk the rode forward. Chuck R As an aside, I noticed the nice mast support strapped to the pulpit. Any idea where this was purchased, or did it come with the boat? I'd like to get my hands on something like this.

5 gallon bucket

My present boat has an anchor locker but my last boat did not. Waht I did was use a 5 gallon bucket to hold the rope and chain and then put the danforth mostly in the bucket too. This was all stowed in a cockit locker. It was too messy to store up around the V-berth. It worked pretty well. Often I would drop and retrieve the anchor from the cockpit and walk the line to the bow for cleating off. In higher winds the cockpit anchoring did not work well for me so I would drag everything up front before dropping the hook.

bungee cord

Chuck, I just wrap a bungee cord around mine. Previous owner advised not letting it hang free as I may be anchored when I least want to be. My mast support is not as fancy but works well. 2X4 with attached rail channels and cradel for mast.

Mast Support

Chuck R, Yes I would like to get a little more info on the mast support from you. I didn't notice an email link in your profile. However, if you wouldn't mind selecting my screen name with the email link and sending me an email I would appreciate it. I don't want to divert the thread away from the topic (anchoring) further if possible. :)
