Not usually, but there are other reasons to avoid

bladders: They're prone to chafing through and oozing. Because fittings are often owner installed, they often leak...and are HIGHLY prone to blowing out at the first sign of a clog. Because they're designed to "hug" the contents, it's almost impossible to prevent odor out the vent from a bladder. Average lifespan isn't much longer than that of a metal tank. Why do you ask?

Because..................

My boat, H30 1980, came with a bladder, I don't know if it ever had a tank. None of the posts I've read mention if a bladder permeates. I have a serious odor problem. I read your book and followed all your tips which reduced the odor by 50-60%. (Thank You!) I plan on replacing the hoses, and was wondering if the bladder should go too.

emergency replacement only.

Tony: The early boats did not have holding tanks. I suggest that you look at what some of the other Hunter 30 owners have done. I would take a look at what is avaialbe from Ronco and see if you can do something that give you 12-20 gals of storeage under your v-berth. The ideal setup my be to find a tank that will fit in the port compartment under the v-berth with a thru hull in the head compartment. You will obviously need a deck fitting for dockside pump outs. You may also want to consider a thru hull fitting in that same compartment with an access panel to open and close the thru hull that is accessible from the cabin side of the vberth vs opening the compartment each time you need to open it. The bladders are a mess waiting to be cleaned up. Really not a matter of if, but WHEN it will fail. The abrasion of these bladder tanks are their worst enemy.

Your bladder may contribute to the odor....

But my money is on the hoses. However, if the bladder isn't a major contributor to your current odor problem, it will be...so the smartest thing you can do is replace it too when you replace the hoses.

It's a crappie job, but someone has to do it.

Peggie, thank you, I will replace the whole package, head to vent, and all points in between. I'm one of those people who likes to keep things clean. If I start out fresh I might win. Steve, thanks for the input. I have two thur hulls in that compartment, one for waste, and one for the speed sensor. There's not a heck of a lot of room to fit a tank. I'm not liking the idea of cutting anything to make one fit. I might have to live with a bladder. The one in there now is a 30 gal. which fills up fast. (kids)

I searched some old posts and came across one from you suggesting a Thetford or Sealand porta potti plumbed for pump out. I like this idea and the top of the line Thetford 885 MDS sells for $158.88. Now if will just fit!
