Screens for hatches

They have screens available on this web site in the chandlery. I bought one and other than it requires a little adjusting it works fine. John is right the other alternative is to make one. We also bought a front hatch cover which we place over the front window opening. Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

Aluminum frame window screen

John: We have made these screens for our hatches and companionways. You can make them yourself or have them done in a screen shop. Ours are made just like the ones you have for your house windows. I think you can actually purchase adjustable corners that will allow you to configure them in different shapes like for the companionway. Once you have built the frame, you can glue on velcro to the headliner and the frame so they stick right in place.

hatch screens

On our 89 h23 I got some screen at the local hardware store and some neopreme, or plastic hose, i cut the screen a little larger than the opening , then I pushed the hose down into the recessed area of the hatch it makes a nice cheap relatively bug free screen , it is easy to install and remove and costs verylittle, happy holidays, Mike Bacome

Aluminum Screens

I went to Home Depot and bought an aluminum screen kit. I used my hatch boards as a pattern. I ground the plastic corner pieces to fit the angle. I used some JB Weld to fill in the gaps. I made 4 screens. Two for the hatch and two for the top. They fit into the hatch groove and the same on top. This was easy to do and cost about $15. My wife also made a bag to store them out of pacific blue sunbrella.

Simple & Inexpensive Screens

A simple and inexpensive way to make hatch screens for any hatch. Go to Homedepot, or any hardware stoor, and get a roll of the plastic screen material and some duct tape. I used the white color tape to match the hull color. Cut the screen material about one inch larger, on each side than the opening you wish to screen. Carefully put half the width of the tape on one side of the screen and then fold the tape over onto the other side of the screen. This leaves no stickey side of the tape out. Tape all four sides overlapping at the corners. This keeps the plastic screen material from ripping. On the forward hatch use velcro on the screen tape and the inside of the hatch opening. On the companion way I used snaps on the outside of the door, drilled into the plastic frame. On the screen material I doubled the tape thickness to give the snaps something to grip on and strengthen the screen. The snaps on the companion way can also be used for a canvas cover over the hatch boards. By having the screen on the outside of the hatch way you can replace more or fewer hatch boards when it gets cold. (See attached photo) When not in use the whole screen rolls up in a nice tight tube for easy storage. The whole project took about an hour after I got out of Homedepot. (I can never get out of that place in an hour). LOL Brigg
