What ham frequencies are used to contact the coast guard. NOT hf radiotelephone channels or vhf channels, but frequencies within the ham bands that amateur hf radios can transmit on?

That you use VHF 16 rather than other methods because it increases the chance that other boater nearby can hear you.

Marine SSB

The CG monitors VHF and Marine SSB, not ham frequencies. However, there are a couple of nets that use 14.300. They can relay messages if needed

In general, ham frequencies aren't used to contact the Coast Guard. You would use marine HF or VHF for that. A popular HF ham frequency for maritime mobile operations is the 20 meter band, 14.300 mhz. The Maritime Mobile Service Net operates there and provides assistance to boaters who are licensed hams. There are other maritime nets on other ham HF frequencies as well. 20 meters is a popular band due to reliable world-wide coverage and allows for reasonable antennas. Other info can be found here:

A Mayday or SOS can be called on any frequency.

As mentioned before, the CG does not monitor Amateur Radio activities. There are many groups out there, like ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service), who train for emergency response. If you encounter a Life/Death emergency, just spin your dial until you hear activity and then break in and make your call. I hope you never have to resort to that.

Coast Guard does monitor HF Frequencies

2182.0 is the prime voice distress frequency, and it is also monitored by the Mexican Navy, and I think also by the Canadian Coast Guard. Others are as found here: http://www.ominous-valve.com/hurricne.txt Have fun Joe S AC7TI

Coast Guard does not monitor any ham frequencies

HF and VHF commercial marine frequencies only. 14.300 and 14.303 Mhz nets would provide you some communications support or you can use any radio on any frequency in an emergency whether that radio is FCC certified or not. You will probably have to explain yourself later because the FCC will probably find out if you do.

HF Frequencies

Joe, you are correct that the CG monitors HF, but only as it deals with marine SSB. The frequency 2182KHz is a marine SSB frequency. Maybe the confusion is that Marine SSB operates in the same basic HF bands that the ham's use (roughly 2 - 30 Mhz), just in their own assigned portion of each band. And marine SSB has channalized their portion of the band. However to make sure users get confused, the channels are not numbered like you see on a VHF radio. Bottom line is all the marine SSB channels are HF, but not in the ham areas of the band and the CG only monitors the marine end of it. Makes sense if you think about it as the CG's mission extends only over the water. It is just one big happy band plan.
