I have been informed that the warranty on my left knee has expired. I'm still gimping along. Just wondering if any one out there has tried sailing with an artificial knee?

peg leg!!

I've brought a friend of mine, who has an artificial leg, sailing a number of times and he handles the helm quite well. Of course moving about the boat is done cautiously but it's doable! I've also sailed many times with a friend who had suffered a stroke leaving him with a weak right side. His physical therapist actually suggested sailing as being good therapy as it offers an uneven platform when heeling which can improve the sense of balance. Good luck with the procedure, after all is said and done, it's really all about attitude!!

My Peg Leg

Here is my story. Been sailing for 30 years, mostly beach cats and small mono hulls. About 15 years ago, hit by a drunk on my motorcycle and lost my left leg above the knee at the scene. Now sail a 26 Mac singlehanded most of the time. Halyards at the mast and hank on jibs. I've found out out that generally where there's a will there's a way. Cept for a new motorcycle, the Admiral out-ranks me on that one.

Good friend of mine had both

replaced over the past year and now is up for anything. Before he got them done he could hardly walk anymore. Just remember to spray a bit of McLube on them. :)

Omega-3 fish oil and glucosomine

Before you go replacing parts consider the following: Most of the guys in my profession (Army Special Forces) routinely get thrown out of perfectly goo aircraft and land on everything from hard concrete runways to patches of prickly pear cactus. None of which is good for the knees. We all swear by omega-3 and glucosamine.

Wouldn't worry about it...

lots of us here with artificial joints and other debillitating conditions, but we all still manage to get out on the water. Worst case is some rehabilitation which is best planned for "off season"!

Racing but still on crutches

one of my friends just had a knee replaced and he was out sailing on Saturday even tho he is still hobbling around on crutches. Another had both hips replaced a few years ago. Says it is great to be without the pain

Round 2 June 18

George, Had my left knee done last summer and am scheduled for the right one this June 18. I was back on Ursa Minor, our O'28, 4 weeks after the surgery. 6 weeks after found me in Nassau sailing a Hobie Cat. Can't wait to get it done so I can dance on the foredeck again in 6' seas. I was in the hospital with several folks who had the same operation and I have to admit that I felt sorry for them. They had not prepared physically or mentally for the proceedure. I was mentally ready because the pain of walking couldn't have been worse than what they were going to do to me, and I did prepare physically by dropping 10# off my 250# frame and going to the gym religiously for the 2 months beforehand to increase my upper body strength. I am 59 and have been in pain and reduced ability for the last 5 years. If I had known that this was going to be such a life changer, I would have done it 5 years ago. By the way; planing on going back to Nassau before the end of summer and sailing the bigger Hobie this year. Best of Luck from a fellow Geezer, PM

Me Too!

Thanks for posting George! I plan to try to hold off until this winter and have both done at once. New minimal invasive procedure whith small cut on inside of each knee instead of big cut over the front. It helps to hear of others who have gone on after to sail again! I'll try to drop some weight like Paul and get ready. Good luck!

Not a problem

George, My almost 80 year old father-in-law has a replacement knee and sails his Corbin 39 around Lakes Huron and Superior. Shouldn't be an issue. Good luck! Dave
