Question for Dana Point folks.

Hi y'all. Planning a trip up to Avalon from San Diego in Sept. We usually hustle directly up to Catalina at nite and hope for a good northerly to sail home. This time we are considering stopping by Dana Pt on the way back to SD.

My question. How far from Avalon to Dana Pt? I assume "normal" prevailing wind is on the beam?

I believe the chart says 42 miles.

It's 34 miles to Avalon, 42 to the west end.

Prevailing wind comes right off the west end to Dana Point. If you set a course for Laguna Beach, you'll get good speed on the broad reach, and make offshore Laguna in 5 hours. Then jibe south to Dana Point, or motor.

If you get too close to running due to pointing at Dana Point, you'll lose speed which eliminates the advantage of the straighter course. Unless you have a spinnaker.
