Hello "ALL SAILORS" I am close to finishing my construction of a spinnaker pole to use on my 222 O'Day. The mast has the track mounted and the spinnaker car. I purchased older Merriman bronze spinnaker pole ends that are exactly the same. They typically have the sliding spring loaded "U" shape opening to attach the sail and to attach pole to the ring on the spinnaker car on the mast. I will try to post a pix. Wish me luck. Here is my question: If you were attaching the ends on your own spinnaker pole which way would you align the openings? a. Would you make the opening directly opposite each other ? b. Would you off-set One opening 45 degrees to the other? c. 90 degrees off-set? e. 180 degrees off-set. When you buy one ready made I don't think you have a choice. Or maybe you do.. ?? Fair Winds Chuck Rothert.

Question about spinnaker pole construction...

Chuck, the two ends are aligned with each other in other words they both face the same direction. Two comments 1) The pole does not attach to the sail clew ever. It is attached to the guy(line). 2) The jaws are installed facing up in the mounted position. I would also suggest that the two bridles be made of different color lines for easy ID.

good question!

Excellent question- good on ya for asking! I would be fascinated to watch a bow monkey jibe that pole with a 90 turn in it... *yks Nice to see this board work so well. B

Jaws up?

Thanks Alan, I knew I'd get a response on this good forum. I havn't owned a sail boat in 50 years so I guess you do forget a few things.. In fact this is the first one that has a spinnaker. Chuck R.

Glad you asked...

I'm glad you brought up the question. I have a whisker pole that I have not used yet as well. I have read about the need for a topping lift to hold the pole up and a downhaul line to hole it in place. Is that really necessary mine appears to have niether. I have also read that it can be used with the Genoa especially in light wind.

depends...

We use a telescoping whisker pole-- It's HUGE and heavy, we use a topping lift- but don't use a downhaul. I don't find I need it with the size of the pole and if it's sheeted well. Smaller pole/boat might change the necessity of the downhaul. Mine wouldn't stay off the lifelines without the topping lift (and it would be impossible to jibe that monster). Is really handy for running wings. B
