Question about Jib and Genoa winches

Hi -

I recently purchased a 23' marconi rigged sloop.

The boat has tracks and leads for a jib and a genoa. There is only one set of winches, on the deck just aft of the genoa track, and this set of winches is not backed up with a cleat.

The jib track and lead are on top of the cabin, and are backed up with cleats.

My first question is can the winches next to the genoa track be used for the jib as well?

My second question is whether it is OK that the genoa winch is not backed up with a cleat?

My third question is can the winch next to the genoa be used for the mainsheet also?

I assume that on a boat this size the winches are not self-tailing. It is hard to imagine how the genoa winches are used on your boat if they are not self-tailing and have no nearby cleats or stoppers. Is there a mooring cleat aft of the winches? Without seeing your deck and hardware layout, it is difficult to say much other than I can see no reason why the genoa winches can't be also used for the jib, other than they probably provide a wider sheeting angle than the tracks/cleats on your cabin top.

Hi Warren - thanks for taking the time to help me! There are mooring cleats, way way aft (where they should be). I attached two pictures that show the rigging.

From the picture it appears that the boat is suposed to have wooden cockpit coamings but they are missing. The jibsheet cleats could have been attached to the wooden cockpit coaming and since the coaming isnt there thats why the cleats are missing.

That's true but I didn't realize there was any rigging on the coamings.

You mean genoa sheet cleats right?

The winches in your photo's look like they might be self-tailing. Does the winch top have a groove around the edge that is slightly smaller than the size of the sheets? Does the edge feel like some sort of rubber material? If yes, then the winch itself is the cleat for the sheets.

The alignment between the jib track car, lead/cleat and winch makes it appear the winch is intended to be used with both sails.

I don't know of any boats this size that would need to use a winch in conjunction with the main sheet. If you do feel a winch is needed to control the boom ... you are out in too much wind with too much sail up!

It looks like the cam cleats on the cabin deck behind the genoa tracks are used in lieu of cleats. If you run the lines back to the winches it will probably still work effectively on a small boat. The jib track locations look questionable though...they might work with a jib but otherwise your sheet is going to run afoul of the shrouds. I see...the genoa tracks are by the winches. Maybe they used the stern cleats....but that is a long run.

Winches, cockpit coamings

I had an Alberg 30 about 40 years ago. It had teak cockpit coamings with cleats attached to the outside of the coamings aft of the winches. The coamings are there for more than a platform for the winches. They are also a backrest. I suggest you try to get a template to
make new cockpit coamings. Also sailing dog is right. A winch can be used to sheet any
jib no matter what size.

Actually, I checked the SC owners website and it appears the SC 23 was originally offered with a number of options. Included were jibsheet winches and tracks mounted on the house, and genoa winches mounted on the coaming with a tracks on the toerail. So our poster is correct when identifying them that way.
