Has anyone rebuilt/replaced the shaft seal? Is it something a person with resonable skills can do or is it best left to a mech. I have a considerable "black line" from the disc on the hull, which is from misadjustment of the bellows I believe. It is the original and is 6 years old.

John -- Haven't done this yet but have scoped it out since PYI recommends replacing the bellows every 6-8 years (mine is also 6 years old). I think the hardest part will be removing the aft half of the shaft coupling, which might be easiest to just cut off with a grinder. Because the prop shaft is so short, there should be plenty of space between the prop and rudder to move the shaft back or even remove it if the Cutless bearing needs replacement at the same time. Keep us posted.
