My boat is a 1997 H376. The holding tank is located about 12 feet from the head. A large part of this (about 6-7 feet) is a straight run. I'm planning to replace the head hoses this spring. Several people have recommended using PVC for the long, straight run, and use flexible hose at the head and holding tank ends. My question is how to join the PVC and head hose? They are both 1.5 inch ID. I've looked for reducers in the boat catalogs and Home Depot, but no luck.

Replace the discharge fitting on the toilet

I'm guessing from your question that you have a Jabsco toilet that has a 1" discharge fitting...you can get a 1.5" from Jabsco...specify straight or 90, depending on which works best in your installation.

PVC fittings

There is a fitting available at the Depot, or any plumbimng outlet for that matter. One end is female 1 1/2" to glue on to 1 1/2" PVC pipe and the other end is female 1 1/2" pipe thread. The fitting gets glued to the pipe so you have a female thread at the end of the pipe. In the plumbing section of West, pick up a Shields 1 1/2" hose barb to male pipe thread fitting. West 2004 catalog page 522 at the bottom, item "E", "model" 285876, or page 524, item "A", 'model" 399071. Wrap some teflon tape around the pipe thread if you like and snug it down. Either does the trick, I've used both for this purpose.

Sealand has the Part you need

They sell it as a spare but several come with their Vacuflush system and other models. They have a fitting that glues onto standard pvc pipe and also accepts the 1 1/2" sanitation hose. use as little hose as possible. You'll like the results, Standard PVC hose barbs don't fit nicely on sanitation hose but will work with patients, heat and some dish soap for lubrication
