I will be receiving in about 3 weeks new covers for the cabin cushions. I remember when I was able to talk my wife into making new cushion covers for a Catalina 25 I owned (there is absolutely no chance she would do it again) the dificulty I had putting the new covers over the old foam. Now with the new covers coming I am again dreading the installation. Is there a easy way, other than pay someone else, to install the covers? US Cushion, who made the original cushions, are also making the replacement will be installing the wood and foam into the back cushions. The seat cushions I will have to attend to myself. Help!

Cushion Covers the easy way

Cushion Covers can be a real pain. Assuming that you have the standard type of over with a zipper at the back, this works about the easiest. First take the cover and turn it inside out. Next take the front part of the cover while it is still inside out and line it up carefully along the front of the cushion. Then start to unroll the cover all the way to the back of the cushion. If you do it right you are turning in rightside out on the foam and are not trying to pull the cover along the foam. If you lined it up initially the zipper should be in the correct position. If this does not make sense, think of it in the same context as a woman putting on nylon stockings. She rolls the stocking on and does not try to put the whole stocking on at one time. Good Luck. Everytime we dry clean the covers, we dread replacing the covers on the foam. However, the inside out method seems to work the best for us.

wrap em

I cleaned the covers on my '85 34 last year. To preclude having my parrot pick up a lot of words I don't want him to use in public, I wrapped the foam with a very thin plastic. The type used for painting, very cheap in a paint/hardware store. I left the plastic on mine, but I experimented with removing the plastic after the foam was in and it worked. While I was going through the exercise I also put another layer of batting to give a softer area. Have fun.

I Installed Hunter Cushions Myself!

About a year an a half ago we order new oyster colored leather cushion covers to replace our previous dark blue velour cushion covers on our Passage 42. There are a lot of cushions on this boat, but I was able to replace all of them easily myself in about 2-3 hours. I certainly would not pay someone to do this easy job. All are heald on with zippers, so I merely unzipped the old ones and fit the foam pieces into the new covers (did some pushing and tugging to make them fit correctly) then zipped up the covers. You should have no problems.

Replace foam in cushion

The easy way is to wrap the foam in light weight clear plastic the same weight as a cleaners bag. Lap over the seams and tape with scotch tape, attach a vacuum cleaner to bag and draw a vacuum. The foam will shrink-keep the vacuum attached and install foam in cover. Shut off vacuum cleaner and REMOVE Plastic. If the plastic remains in the cushion the foam will deteriorate. Bob Joyce

Replaced mine last year

with covers from US Cushion on my H34. The new covers had the zippers in better places & made it easier to recover. Spray the new covers with a Scotch Guard product after installation. Its easier to apply & dry as opposed to limp cloth. It should only take 1-2 hrs including spray time. BOL PJ
