Almost ready to put my 94 26' in. How does the mast raising system work? And what's the deal with this water ballast? Do you leave that bottom part next to the bottom open? Or do you shut if after it fills up? Thanks

John, Better get....

an owners manual and read it all. Your answers are all there. With out a good understanding the mast raising procedure or ballast system you could (and very likely would) injure yourself very seriously or cause some very expensive damage to your boat.

I agree with Ray . . .

The seacock should be opened (as well as the vent) and allowed to fill then closed when full. Assuming the mast raising system is the same as the 23.5/240 . . .bridle cables are connected, the mast raising pole is put in place the hole)at the base of the mast. Attach the main sheet to the eye in the anchor locker and to the mast raising pole. The jib halyard is attached to the other side of the mast raising pole. Length should be adjusted to provide about a 10-15 degree angel toward the mast. Pull the mast up with the sheet and attach headstay. All this said . . .get a manual or look in the archives for diagrams.

need help?

Call Hunter and request an owners manual for the Hunter 26. Once you have read it, ask for my phone and I will walk you through it as there are tips not mentioned in the book that will help. Call Gregg Emerson at Hunter for my phone number. Crazy Dave Condon

Be very careful !!!!

I made the mistake of not following the exact directions and tried to improvise on a problem I had. It cost me a new mast and boom (they don't make the ISOMAST anymore). It also cost me 8 weeks of no sail at the begining of this season :-(. Be very careful. The system works very well and is safe and you will not have any problems. Make sure you have someone at the mast to hold it when you connect the mast raising pole. Just follow the directions and don't ever be in a hurry.

Tell Us All Dave

If there are hints not in the manual we ala could benefit from shre them with all of us. Somwhere in the archives is a checklist to use when raising or lowering the mast. Lastly I leave my tank closed when launching, to float the boat off of the trailer easier.

Tooo Much Help

Too much of a good thing! The system is well designed and can easily be raised and rigged in 1/2 hour single handed. One helper is nice, but be sure they help and don't distract. A very important chore is to observe the rigging to be sure the turnbuckles don't kink or get caught somewhere they don't belong. You're pulling with a 4:1 advantage on a 25' lever...... you don't need to be a mechanical engineer to know this can be dangerous. Slow, easy and observant. Don't try it without understanding the manual or having an experienced 'rigger' helping. I always rig on the trailer because it's easier to find any dropped hardware but some prefer to rig on the water. Happy Sailing! Ken S/V Wouff Hong

response

Rick; There are a few suggestions. First with the old style, make sure the stabilizing lines are in place. Yep, I lost a mast once and did not like it. AS for masts, Isomat can be replaced with Charleston Spars in Charlotte, NC but you need to go through the How store for a good price. Z Spar can be replace with a US Spar as well. The mast rainign pole needs to be raised up 5-10 degrees when using the mast raise system. You need to look at the line next to the shackle to make sure the line does not chafe thru all the way. After 5 years replace the jib halyard. While raising, always stop if there is any tension to see if a line or standing rigging is caught. also make sure to shake the turnbuckles out before the mast is all the way up. Check the tightness of the chain plats particualy the shroud chain plates. When rainsing the mast by pulling on the line, if there is another party with you, tell the person to pushe the mast with a 10-15 pound thrust only. It will be alot easier to raise the mast up at the foredeck. Crazy Dave Condon

Making New Mast

Charleston can replace an Isomast but they don't have any raw stock and they have placed their order for this year from Sweden. They don't like to make small boat masts anymore. I talked to David L. He was very helpful but could not help at this time. So complete mast and boom from US-Spar will be on the way in about 4 Weeks. IMHO go slow and have someone help on mast raising and mast take down. Don't assume any thing check check and recheck before you unhook the jib forestay. Carl S/V Wind Shadow (on the hard 4 more weeks) today it is 75 degrees with a 5-8 knot wind :-(
