Pushing the winter envelope.

Friday I sailed my Highlander for the final time in 2008. It was about 55 degrees with winds of 12-15 kts. Saturday the winds were over 20 and Sunday gusted to 30, temps in the 40's. Still my friends were out there mixing it up. And I had to share their pictures. Sailing on a small lake when the winds are up is such great fun. The blue boat is a C&C 30, the other a Seidelman 30. They race against each other all summer long and just cannot give it up. The lake gets drained soon and the docks put away. That will force the end I am afraid.

Not much you can do to extend the season if the lake has no water in it.

No sailing this past weekend. We were closing up the camp for winter and there was a decent wind/rain storm along the coast. It did clear up beautifully after noon yesterday and we should have gone out but we were busy at the house.

Daysailing this weekend. Forecast is for sun and mid 40s. We have the GMORA awards dinner Sat. night and we need to pick up our 1st place trophy for the NE harbor overnight race:dance::dance::dance: We also are hoping to win the Regatta hospitality award for the 3rd year running for the party we throw after our annual regatta.

Why trailering is better

One of the benifits of taking the boat out of the water every time, is I do not have to worry about the lake freezing over before I get it out. That is why trailering is better than keeping it in a slip!:Liar:

I usually keep my H28.5 in the water on the mid-Chesapeake until about the second week in December. I tend to only this time of year (November onward....) according to my own "55/10" rule: the temps have to be at least 55 deg at mid-day and no more than 10 kts. If the wind goes up, so must the temperature. But anything less than 55 deg and more than 10 kts of wind is just too cold to be out in an open cockpit for a few hours. Now if I had Jim Seamans' FFR (Floating Florida Room), I would revise my sailing criteria...

Draining Lake Erie.

You didn't know that Scott? Georgian Bay must go down when we let the water out.

But seriously our little Atwood Lake is one of many flood-control lakes in Ohio. So the water is let out to prepare for the spring rains. It really isn't a problem though. It doesn't happen until November and it is full again in April. Sometimes too full. The picture from last April is of the control box for the lift. That box is next to a roadway and five feet above the dock wall. All of the shorepower boxes on four foot posts are under water.

We're coming out early

this year Warren due to family getting into the way of sailing. They refuse to have Thanksgiving/Christmas on the boat. The ingrates..Santa is not visiting them this year...

Sun was great sailing. Winds from the south at 8-10, Java on a beam reach hitting 6.4, all was right with the world. No political ads, no one screaming on the vhf....

Penny & I will cook some turkey for you guys and think about you all. Hopefully we will have fair winds that weekend, we live for it. You family is lucky, I would tell mine that if they wanted to have Thanksgiving diner with me that it would be on board

Last few boats remaining

We're one of the last 20 or so left in the water, but come out tomorrow, before all the waters gone and I'm on the bottom.

Headed out a week ago sunny, cool 10 deg. and 10 - 15 knots. Zipped up the Floating Florida Room and we were down to t-shirts.... toasty warm.

Turkey Day was a couple of weekends ago and we let everyone else know we would be awol and afloat somewhere all weekend. :dance:

weird! Sailing when it is ten degrees and turkey day has already passed?! You are just lucky we haven't drained Erie yet. Come February though you should be able to go sailing again. Just come on down to Tampa Bay, Ladylove's new home by then I hope.

Been watching philly and tampa bay. It is raining and about 40 degrees and I surely am glad to be at home.

Went sailing last Sat and Sun. Temp was in mid 70's water temp 68, wind 10kts. Watched the game with dinner and drinks at El Toritos overlooking the harbor. Wife is from Philadelphia, so it was a perfect day. </p>I would hate to think of having to put my boat away for the winter, I really feel for you guys this time of the year.

Atwood Lake

Sounds like fun Ed. I've pulled my boat from Erie, in preparation for the draining & the cold. Here's a picture of my only sailing experience on Atwood Lake, August 2004 I think. It was fun while the weather lasted.

I just got off the phone with a fellow Ericson owner and loyal crew of Cordelia. He returned from 5 days of cruising today and will head out again for a few more days later this week. All single handing. Needless to say he has had his pick of vacant moorings everywhere he went.
