Pushing the envelope!?

I am very envious. My small lake sailing buddies are going in this week! It is supposed to reach the mid-60s so they will be painting and splashing. The first picture is just two weeks ago. That little box is the control for our crane for the one-designs. Top of the box is five feet above the wall which is another foot or more above normal water. As you can see in the second picture the docks are not yet installed. That was yesterday. The guys will just tie to the walls until their slips are ready. You can see that crane and box. Directly below that car parked next to our Atwood Yacht Club. Yep, envious.

Pushing The Envelope

Yup.. here we were last Tuesday pushing the old Stilletto envelope.. Was blowing hard enough on the Ponchartrain that we motored once we got close in to shore where the waves were smaller !

Heck Claude, you guys are always "in". Up here getting the bottom wet is a big deal. Most don't make it before Memorial Day. I'll be lucky to make June 1. I have decided to keep the Highlander on the trailer and concentrate on the H37C. Else I could be with these guys this week.

I painted my rudder this morning and replaced a trailer bunk yesterday. Also put the second coat on the hand rails this morning. I need to paint the bottom with some VC17 yet. Should be in by the end of the month. Now the weather just needs to warm up.

I just reserved our launch spot...Morning of May 9th. That's pretty typical for us up here on the lake they call Gitche Gumee.

So Danny and Jerry, you guys are painting and varnishing in the low 40's? Any problem with that? Or maybe you're loaded and have your boats inside and warm.

Ed, I may be loaded, but the boat's not getting painted this year. I put a coat of VC-17 on every other year. The lake is so cold that we get no growth on the bottom. This is my waxing year. I have to admit that I only wax every other year opposite the painting year. Plenty of other projects to do but nothing pressing before launch except the wax.

I need to paint the bottom with some VC17 yet.

Don't forget that the hull itself needs to be above 50 degrees. The air could be 60 but the fiberglass cold soaked after a night in the high 30 - low 40's could still be too cold.

Ed, here in Maryland I am able to keep my boat in the water year around. She is hauled every other year and 2 coats of Micron Extra are applied. So far, 4 years, it is working well. I do have a diver friend who will clean my prop for me if needed. Had my first sail of the season last week when the yard guys moved my boat from the winter slip to the summer slip, lol.

You guys are making me ill with envy. You are even thinking about launching. Just watched snow falling from the sky again. Will be a while yet before the winter blanky comes off.
