Purpose of pulleys lateral to mast step?

Dave, if you have some cleats on the mast, I would not worry too much about leading lines back to the cockpit. I launched a few days ago and bent on the main today . With halyards, single line reefing and another line that I havent figured out yet, I decided that all of this leading lines to the cockpit is a large pain in the rear. There was very little wind and I tried the single line reefing from the cockpit and found the friction to make it difficult. I raised and lowered the jib from the cockpit and had to go forward 2 or 3 times to keep the jib from going over the side when lowering. I will go sailing Saturday and see if it seems any better, but so far I really dislike all the lines to the cockpit. I am new to Catalinas, but I have sailed about 30,000 miles in a variety of boats so I have seen the conventional side of sail handling. Sometimes newer methods are not really better methods. The previous advice about DONT CHANGE THINGS RIGHT AWAY is good solid advice. I am going to try to get used to the lines to the cockpit before I scrap that method. ______Grant.

Each to their own. I've posted this hundreds of time before. The deal is SAFETY. That mast position is not somewhere I wanna go to reef. Either we reefed before we went out or we led the lines aft.
