I may be purchasing a 27' Hunter Sailboat with a Yanmar Diesel. I'm new to owning a sailboat and to sailing also. I would appreciate some reviews of current and past owners of 'Hunter sailboats', how they liked the boat and how it size's up next to other sailboats of the same size. The boat looks like it is in great shape and the purchase price is 8000.00 . I still need to have it surveyed......appreciate any advice.

Try this site

Well Don, you should try this site under "owners reviews". You will find several opinions on this paticular type of boat. As a Hunter 27 owner myself I can tell you in advance that you will do an excellant purchase. I have been under quite some heavy conditions with her and she didn't left me in the cold once. Good Luck Olivier

Owners Reviews, Survey!

We own a 1977 h27 - she is a great cruising boat. My complete review is in the owner review section with many others. At the age of these boats, a strong, independent survey is a key condition of sale. Most are quite serviceable, but 20-27 years is lots of time for issues to develop. The $8,000 price is low enough to make me wonder if the seller suspects a problem. David Lady Lillie 1977 h27

I owned a 1979

It was a great boat. Built like a brick ____ House - could not kill it. The only major problem was the toe rail (black rail around the deck) leaked. I tightned all of the bolts and it stopped leaking.

Potential Problems

The 1975-1984 Hunters are good boats. Not the best sailing into the wind or for blue water cruising. But for the money and length they are great. Watch out for cabin top problems due to leaking around mast base. Causes rotting of mast support in the cabin top. Not fatal but requires mast removal for repair. Also look at cabin sole where mast support rests on the cabin sole. The stringer under the floor there may rot and let mast sink into the floor. Again not fatal but requires supporting the mast and cutting out the floor to replace the stringer. Best of luck to you. My neighbor has a 1977 and I have a 1980.

Appreciate the info.

Thanks..... Warren, Peter, Oliver and David I appreciate the information, I will make a note of all the things you've mentioned. Its good to hear that the 27' Hunter Sailboat is well liked or appreciated by current and previous owners.

I just traded my H27 in, and, my heart...

is breaking. I love that old boat. It was my first, and, a great starter boat/general pocket cruiser. I had an '82 that was in wonderful shape when I purchased it. It sails GREAT without a traveler system. Great hull design (thanks to John Cherubini). I think it's an awesome value for the money (IF the boat you are looking at is in decent shape). I just moved up to a '94 29.5, and, it's weird, both boats are docked right next to each other. I feel great about the 29.5 until I look over at my beautiful, old h27...heart wrenching, but, time to move on.

Good to hear

Thanks Tim, for taking the time to type in your feelings on the h27. It makes me feel alot better about purchasing the boat when I hear comments like that. The only thing left to do is getting the boat surveyed, and thats scheduled for tomorrow. Hopeing for a exceptable survey/evaluation, I believe it will because the boat looks like its in great shape.

Blisters

Watch out for blisters. Our 77 had an extremely severe case.

Survey evaluation

Hi Skipper, I believe 3000.00 is an exceptional good deal. I was happy with the evaluation and survey on the boat. I need to replace the seacock to the water inlet for the engine and fix the anchor light because it isn't working. The surveyor appraised the boat at 11'500.00 Like I had mentioned I paid 8000.00. I've taken the boat out twice now and everything seems to work great. Looking forward learning how to use it now.
