Canadian Purchase

Has anybody had the pleasure of enduring a sailboat purchased from British Columbia? Is there any special tariffs, red tape, or taxes involved? There seem to be some good deals on 30' Cat's up there and I am concerned on the implications. Any information would be helpful, Boatless in Seattle

Taxes

I don't have the experience your asking about however I am commisioning a 310 in San Diego and there is a considerable CA sales tax savings if I take the boat to Mexico for 3 out of the first 6 months. You may want to see if there is a similar savings in WA but pay particular attention to the details. Frank

Canadian Purchase

There are a lot of good boat deals to be found in British Columbia, especially given the great exchange rate. There shouldn't be any tax implication in Canada, unless you are buying new or you are purchasing it off someone who owns it in their own business or corporation. In which, case you will have to pay the 7% provincial sales tax (PST). I believe you can get around the 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST)as you are a non-resident. However, most reputable brokers will know the tax details and will be able to answer your questions regarding tax. You will also have to check if there are any duties that will be incurred in the State of Washington when you bring your boat into your home port.
