I am going to suvey a 1976 C 22 this week for possible purchase. It's a swing keel model that has not had the best of care. Can anyone give me some tips on what potential problems to look at, etc., etc.? Any immediate help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Tom Mountjoy

"76 C22 Purchase

Tom, I may have a little advice as I was in your shoes two months ago. After getting the boat home ( a 1977 C22 ) I found out the fore hatch is just cut out and the flange and hatch just glued in. The glue had failed but was unnoticed until I put my full weight on the deck! Check to see if the forstay attach at the bow was upgraded. Late model boats have a "tang" that goes over the bow toward the tow eye and anchors into the hull. Or another modification is to run a strap and turnbuckle to the eye on the interior. Another big area of concern is the cable and winch for the swing keel. I have yet to drop my keel to inspect it. Your best bet is to order a catalog from Catalina Direct that has all the mods and parts listed. A real neat book and they send me updates. All the above concerns are addressed in the book with pictures. A real help! I did find lots of little cracks in the gell coat and I'm still tracking down rain water leaks. She is still on the trailer and will remain there until I can stop the water intrusion every time it rains! E-mail me if you need more help, see below Thanks, Jay Beery vettesrus@mciworld.com

Swing Keel Cable

I purchased a 1979 Catalina 22 last year and over all it's a good boat. One area to check is where the cable for the swing keel rubs the boat just above the keel where it is attached. The cable tends to rub into the fiberglass and can rub into the sides quite deeply. My boat had suffered this damage on both sides of the cable.
