Hi, I'm looking at buying a Catalina 22 in the 1978-82 year range. I found a 1978 that I'm interested in. Plan to drive out and see it this weekend. Is there anything special to look out for in the 1978 model? Any gotchas or options to look for? What about Catalina 22's in general 1978-82 era. Thanks and look forward to hearing from y'all. --Steve

Leaks & delamination

In a boat that old, rotten decks & bulkheads are going to be your biggest problem. Tap the deck near the mast & any thru-holes (rigging, stanchions, cleats, etc)- does is sound hollow or different than the rest? Jump up & down - does the deck give? Tap around the chainplates on the bulkheads - hollow? If the areas are small, you may be able to do relatively easy fixes on them. If they're big, run away & don't look back! Another sure sign that there are leaks is the tell-tale glob of sealant on top of a fastener. LaDonna

Get/Read catalinadirect manual first

I just purchased an 84 Catalina 22 and it came with the CatalinaDirect.com manual/directory. The tips, suggestions and information about differences in models is well worth the $10-15 before you buy a boat. I highly recommend reading this before you buy a boat.
